What counts as a plumbing emergency?
The clearest test is whether the water is still running or the problem stops you using the basics. A burst or split pipe, water spreading across a floor or through a ceiling, a toilet or drain backing up into the house, no water at all, or a complete loss of hot water all qualify. A dripping faucet or a single slow drain can normally wait for a scheduled visit.
What should I do while waiting for a plumber after a burst pipe?
Shut off the main water valve, which is usually where the supply enters the house near the basement front wall or the water meter. Then open the lowest tap in the house to drain the remaining pressure and get the water out of the pipes faster. If water is near outlets, wiring, or a panel, turn the power off at the breaker and stay clear of that area.
How do I know if my water heater needs replacing?
Age is the biggest indicator, since most tank-style heaters last somewhere between eight and twelve years. Rust-coloured or metallic-tasting hot water, rumbling or popping sounds from sediment, moisture around the base, and hot water that runs out faster than it used to all suggest the tank is near the end. A failed element or thermostat is a repair, not a replacement.
Why does my drain keep clogging?
A drain that clears and then blocks again almost always has something still in the line rather than a fresh blockage each time.
